Texas is horrible
By Newbie

Clip to ScrapBook
I teach in Texas, and it is one of the worst as far as "teaching to the test" goes. I used to believe that it was okay to expect students to pass the standardized test because teachers should be teaching the appropriate
content. In a way, I understand the accountability aspect, but at the same time it has gone way too far. I just read a newspaper article about some of the schools in my area that received such low scores that the students can go somewhere else if they choose. A friend of mine teaches ESL, and she said that some of her students who have been in Texas for only a few months will have to
take the test, and they are expected to pass it. Not only do those kids not know all of the content, but they don't understand the language either. I love how the people who make all of these decisions are either businessmen/women or haven't been in a classroom in a very long time. I could go on and on about this, but basically I agree with you, and it's only going to get worse. I have been in schools where bulletin boards are all about the TAKS test; how ridiculous!
