Texas is horrible By Newbie

I teach in Texas, and it is one of the worst as far as "teaching to the test" goes. I used to believe that it was okay to expect students to pass the standardized test because teachers should be teaching the appropriate| content. In a way, I understand the accountability aspect, but at the same time it has gone way too far. I just read a newspaper article about some of the schools in my area that received such low scores that the students can go somewhere else if they choose. A friend of mine teaches ESL, and she said that some of her students who have been in Texas for only a few months will have to | | take the test, and they are expected to pass it. Not only do those kids not know all of the content, but they don't understand the language either. I love how the people who make all of these decisions are either businessmen/women or haven't been in a classroom in a very long time. I could go on and on about this, but basically I agree with you, and it's only going to get worse. I have been in schools where bulletin boards are all about the TAKS test; how ridiculous!
