Dibels
By Patricia

Clip to ScrapBook
Dibels is a fluency assessment for reading developed through a university in Oregon. It is used across the country particularly since NCLB came to be. If you go to the internet and just type in DIBELS you should be able to
find their site. Students read three reading passages(at my 3rd grade level) which are timed for one minute. They are supposedly grade-level. The score is determined by the number of words read correctly and the final score is the whatever the middle number score is between the three readings. There is a target score that indicates what is grade-level proficiency. Students should meet
that target by the end of their grade year (ours is 110 wds correctly read in one minute) or they may need interventions to help them meet the score. Teachers at my grade site went through a training session prior to beginning our use. It was no big deal. The training manual is easy to understand at least it was for me. Now as one of my friends often say, "I hope this is clear as mud." Ha!! I don't think training will affect an opinion about the assessment. I do think how your district uses it will. I have a somewhat negative opinion because it is not being used as the program was designed to be. Patricia
