extra coverage
By Charilla Conner

Clip to ScrapBook
I've been subbing for almost 14 years, all grades, all subjects. Principals will on occasion ask that I cover another class. I first ask if I'm getting paid extra. That gives them a clue that they are asking for something extra. NYS law requires that we get at least 1/2 hour for lunch, breaks are not required. Does their extra work infringe on your rights? Speak up, what will they do, not call you to do that job again? Since it's something you have a choice in, maybe you don't want to go back. Check with your state labor board and maybe even the state ed. dept. The principals usually only ask once. But I have been known to not answer the phone in the teacher's room so they can't get me. If it's really bad, don't go back. Good luck.
