Harcourt for 1st
By AmberM

Clip to ScrapBook
We use Harcourt at our school for reading. I do NOT care for these readers as preprimers because the stories are too easily memorized so once the children hear it once they are just echoing and not truly reading. Also the
stories do not build on each other as far as sight words and vocabulary. The words they have in the first story are totally different than what they use in the next story. I have to use alot of extra phonics and sight word practice to get them really reading. I have actually been using an old Scott Foresman series whos stories do build one upon the other, and the Harcourt I'm using as
supplement readers, sometimes as a guided reading stories. I do not reccomend Harcourt for first grade......

However, My daughter is in third grade and loves the stories in the Hercourt reader. The comprehension tests are worded well and not at all confusing for her. They are both multiple choice with two written answers per test. Their workbook seems to cover all the story elements and reading skills that would be expected for third grade.
