Writing...have your students write a letter to a soldier, thanking him/her for the gift of a safe Christmas this year?

Compare/Contrast....the kind of life the soldier is living compared to ours. Have students work in pairs or threes to highlight these.

Poems... "I am" poem. It could be a "I am a Soldier" poem. This would be good for characterization, using the poem for ideas.

Collage... cut out pictures of the life we have here that is being protected by our soldiers.

These are just some ideas...

I think it's important that the lessons/activities be kept upbeat!
