I was wondering why this is such a debate. I posted much earlier in this thread and can hardly believe what a stir it has caused.I have to agree with you Roo. A teacher needs to do what works for his/her students- be it | checkmarks, stickers, colored sticks, recess time, etc. Someday these kids will be adults who will have to be accountable for their behavior. Yes, this is school which is different from the "adult" world, but kids get an understanding for how that "adult" world works through being accountable for their work and behavior at school. If my child is misbehaving or not doing her "job" in school | | and her teacher has her sit out for five or ten minutes at recess that is just fine with me. At home she misses play time as a consequence. She understands that if she doesn't do what she needs to do then she will miss out on the fun stuff.Empathizing, paraphrasing, questioning, etc. is great for dealing with student behaviors in a respectful effective manner, but it is not a consequence for negative behavior.
