just to clarify

Clip to ScrapBook
Recess here is obviously very different from other places. There is no set time, just when and if the teacher chooses. When my class has recess, I take them out and I stay with them. There's no one else. If a child misses
they still go out, they just are not allowed to play. The ones who miss for not completing work take the work with them and must finish it outside before playing. For other misbehaviors that my consequences call for missing, they stand by the fence for about 5 minutes. After that time, we talk about why they missed that time to play, then they go play.

I already do incentive charts

with all my students. Some of them could care less. I do appreciate the suggestion. It's not so much a lack of understanding, because I wouldn't keep recess away for that. My expectations aren't too high (I don't think they are) because I always tell my students that everyone will not have the same grades because everyone is different and has different things they are great at. I let them know from the beginning that if they always do their best, I can't ask for much more. There are just some kids who don't give a rip and could care less about doing their work or getting in trouble of any kind. I know that comes from home, and sorry to say, I can't change the parents.
