make what you're teaching them relevant to THEIR lives....anticipation guides are a good way to get started (you know, agree or disagree, statements) these can be actual facts from the next section in the text you are going
to cover, after making their initial "response" have students provide "proof" as to whether they were correct or not by citing the page/statement where they either support their initial response or refute it based upon textual information....group led activities (such as reviews) work well with even the WORST behaved students as long as they are actively involved....for example, create
a graphic organizer on the board and provide the responses you want out to the side (on construction paper or something)....have students first complete the activity on their own (in pencil)then as a group review the correct responses and allow students to "place" the answers in the correct spots....finally, try a lot of POSITIVE reinforcement....i don't care how old the students are or how "cool" they think they are it still works.....postcards home are a really good way to connect
