Mine have the same problem. I think they are so used to having noise in the background of whatever they are doing, they learn to tune it out. I have to admit I'm guilty of that myself. Another part with this year's group
is they seem to be lazy, wanting someone else (like me!) to just give them the answer. The state test dictates mandatory retention in third grade to those who don't pass, but mine are oblivious to this and keep waiting for me to spoonfeed information to them. Their parents don't get it either! Some days you just want to scream!

As for how I handle it, I usually make the kids read the directions

aloud chorally and then call on specific kids to tell me what the directions said. I've also resorted to giving assignments letter grades (that would normally be classwork) when I really want their attention. If anyone else has hints, please share!
