"Its" is listed as the possessive form of the pronoun "it," just like "his" is the possessive of "he" or "their" is the possessive of "they." I haven't seen a grammar book in a while, but I believe you add apostrophes (and "s" where applicable) to NOUNS to make them possessive, but I think PRONOUNS probably all have their own possessive forms. (I just wanted to make the distinction between nouns and pronouns before I ended this message.)
