My feeling is ... By Kerry

recess shouldn't be taken away, period. I don't believe in it. I have other ways of dealing with misbehavior, and I firmly believe that the "punihsment" MUST fit "the crime."For "Absolutely!" -- I'd like to make the | correction that "we're all" not waiting for Stacia's listed consequences, you are. I wonder if it's because you'd like some suggestions from her to use in your own classroom. I don't know what grade everyone is speaking to, more specifically, "Absolutely!" It's unfortunate, Absolutely!, that most of your kids' parents are in jail or have been, and that boundaries and goals in your classroom | | are (seemingly) largely supported by missing recess. That is definitely your perogative. I personally feel it's harsh to use missing recess so freely when there are many other avenues that can be explored for consequences, even for kids whose parents are serving time or did. These kids are often the ones who most need love, positive attention, and real consequences to survive in the "real world," as you stated. I don't think that missing recess accomplishes very much. But whatever. As I said, I don't what grade you're speaking to, and my experience lies w/ grades 3 and under. In any case, we all have our opinions and ways of running our classrooms -- Many of my behavior/consequence philosophies can be found at www.responsiveclassroom.org, in case anyone is interested.
