Long Island-No Jobs
By Rosemary

Clip to ScrapBook
Kathleen, I was in the same boat. I went back to school for a Master's in Ed, subbed in two Suffolk Districts and became a permanent sub in one of them. Districts on Long Island almost never hire their subs to fill their
empty positions. It was a dead end. I am now teaching in a Catholic School in Nassau County. Before I got the job I considered moving out of state. Have you heard about the Long Island Educational Consortium? If you earned your degree from a Long Island college or University you are able to participate and it is worth looking into. Every March all the teaching programs on Long Island
(Post, St. Joseph's, Dowling, Hofstra, and Stony Brook)participate in an out of state recruitment event. School Districts come for all over the US to recruit because NY has such high standards for teachers. I went and got three on the spot offers (Los Angeles, Fort Lauderdale and Charlotte, NC). I know many teachers who subbed for 7+ years before getting a classroom of their own. Good luck with the job search.
