Long Island-No Jobs By Rosemary
|
|
Kathleen, I was in the same boat. I went back to school for a Master's in Ed, subbed in two Suffolk Districts and became a permanent sub in one of them. Districts on Long Island almost never hire their subs to fill their| empty positions. It was a dead end. I am now teaching in a Catholic School in Nassau County. Before I got the job I considered moving out of state. Have you heard about the Long Island Educational Consortium? If you earned your degree from a Long Island college or University you are able to participate and it is worth looking into. Every March all the teaching programs on Long Island | | (Post, St. Joseph's, Dowling, Hofstra, and Stony Brook)participate in an out of state recruitment event. School Districts come for all over the US to recruit because NY has such high standards for teachers. I went and got three on the spot offers (Los Angeles, Fort Lauderdale and Charlotte, NC). I know many teachers who subbed for 7+ years before getting a classroom of their own. Good luck with the job search.
