Clip to ScrapBook
This year I have had success letting the resource students I see pick books to read independently. I wrote a grant last year and got multiple copies of those Step into Reading books Level 1,2,3. You can find these little
books at the big bookstores. I wrote comprehension questions for each of the books. Weekly I change the activity they do with the book-- draw a banner for your book, describe the main character in 5 sentences etc..

I have read groups where I chose the books that are read as a group. The "corner" books are chosen by the student and they read it at their own pace. I have students

reading a book a week. Some are branching into easy chapter books for the first time also.

On the wall we have a book quilt where I outlined an area with a border. When a student has read a book, they take a colored index card and write the title and their name on the card. Then they staple the index card touching another card on the display. Every week our patchwork "quilt" is getting bigger and bigger.

This was a big project that I worked on this summer but now that my corner library is done it is great. If a student is done there is always "corner" reading to do. I have pillows, rugs, and a cozy chair in the corner for reading.
