Subbing
By skidd

Clip to ScrapBook
I subbed for 7th, 8th, and 9th grades for six weeks of a teacher's 8 week maternity leave. She had the baby early, so she wasn't finished with her plans and left the room less organized than expected. The kids had already
"run off" one sub and were quick to remind me of that when I came. The prior sub helped me to make some sense out of what the teacher left, but it took a while to get the hang of it.

I am a firm believer in seating charts. It seems like no one under the age of 17 should be able to choose where they sit, because they'll use it to their advantage.

Constantly patrol the room.

You might just keep a lot of things from starting that way.

Make sure they're doing assignments. If they're not, start helping them do it. If they say they know how, make them prove it by showing you some work! They'll start working just to get you away from them!

The seventh graders were extra special. The more they talked, the more pages of book work I put on the board. Eventually, the kids who do the work will turn on those misbehaving.
