My groups
By Mary Mac

Clip to ScrapBook
My groups are set up by ability but I change my groups usually after each book. I sometimes see kids that I feel could be challenged by a more difficult level and then I see some that need some time with a lower level book.
I sometimes have all girl and all boy groups. With the on and above grade level readers I treat their groups as book clubs. The kids use "Think Marks" ( found in the Fountas and Pinnel book) to guide them in talking about their books in their groups. I try to sit in on at least some of their conversations. I also collect their Think Marks each week to check on them. About once a
week or once every two weeks I will give them a more extensive reading response assignment. Most of my ideas for reading responses have come from the internet, by using Google. My school has a Literacy Library with many, many, leveled books but most of my selections are books that I have gotten with my Scholastic Book club points. I am very fortunate to have a Para Pro that covers one of my groups and I co-teach with the Special Education teacher who takes the lowest level readers. I hope this helps, please let me know if you have any other questions that I might be able to help you with!
