When I was a student teacher I did not expect a gift from my master teacher. Just the opposite! I felt as though I owed them so much for welcoming me into their classrooms and that their gift was sharing the knowledge and experience they had.
I usually get my student teachers a gift, can't think of when I haven't, but I do try to make it fit the person. Many times I have given a gift certificate to a local school supply store. One time I let my students bring something to put in a basket. Also, I have given books, anything from a Scholastic Rain Forest Activity Book to a classroom management favorite. I can't afford a lot and try to keep my purchases around $10. Of course, a card with words of appreciation and best wishes, too.
