My students just finished Thanksgiving stories and they loved writing them. They wrote 5 paragraph essays. I know it's too late for this but I had thought that if I didn't do such a report in November, then I would have them write about Civil Rights heros in January. For my Thanksgiving stories I borrowed dozens of books from the library on Pilgrims, Mayflower, etc. For Civil Rights you can go to the children's department and borrow books on Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks. Some of my best reports came from children who were amazed that they learned so much from the easy step 2 books that we encouraged them to read when they were in second grade. Good luck.
