I am going back to the A-Beka phonics program that I learned in "my early" years of teaching. One of the parents homeschooled her 3 children in this curriculum until their church opened up a school which is now a charter school. Many children need the foundation in how the letter/sound relationshipis and how they blend to make words. Look into a curriculum simular to that as a supplement to your text...
