Thank you, I love it, It's just what I wanted

Hi Cathy,

Last week, I brought in home-made brownies for my class for the first time this year. Before I served them, I gave them my speech about the proper response whenever someone gives them something as a gift. The
ONLY proper response is "Thank you! I love it! It's just what I wanted!"

I review with them all the things you DO NOT say....
This brownie is awfully small...
This brownie is kind of dry...
My mom makes better brownies than this...
I don't really like brownies...
Can you make cupcakes next time instead?...

And then I go on to tell them that they should respond to

ANY gift they receive with "Thank you! I love it! It's just what I wanted!" They should not say...
I already have this.
This looks stupid.
I wanted ___________ instead of this.

No matter what they're thinking in their head, they don't say it. Even if Aunt Gladys gave them the ugliest sweater on the planet, the response is still...Thank you! I love it! It's just what I wanted!

I make it into kind of a game. They laugh and chant it with me. For some of them, it is the first time someone has ever told them how to respond when they are the recipient of an act of kindness.

BTW, as I handed out each brownie, they all smiled and told me, "Thank you, I love it, It's just what I wanted."

As the year goes in, I'll remind them before I ever give them anything so they'll remember the correct response. I don't think you can assume they have been taught manners. But as teachers, we can do it very quickly, effectively, and painlessly in the classroom.

Just an idea that works for me.
