Last week, I brought in home-made brownies for my class for the first time this year. Before I served them, I gave them my speech about the proper response whenever someone gives them something as a gift. The
I already have this. This looks stupid. I wanted ___________ instead of this. No matter what they're thinking in their head, they don't say it. Even if Aunt Gladys gave them the ugliest sweater on the planet, the response is still...Thank you! I love it! It's just what I wanted! I make it into kind of a game. They laugh and chant it with me. For some of them, it is the first time someone has ever told them how to respond when they are the recipient of an act of kindness. BTW, as I handed out each brownie, they all smiled and told me, "Thank you, I love it, It's just what I wanted." As the year goes in, I'll remind them before I ever give them anything so they'll remember the correct response. I don't think you can assume they have been taught manners. But as teachers, we can do it very quickly, effectively, and painlessly in the classroom.
