I teach second grade also. I do believe that second graders are definitely old enough to understand the concepts of lying and cheating and the difference between earning something and stealing it. Watch the shows on 60 minutes about the high school kids that buy and sell research papers on the internet. it's not wrong because they didn't get caught. This kid is headed down that road. Good for you for calling him on it, and the mother, too! Cheating is cheating, whether it's a student or a parent. I don't think it has to be done in an emotional way or in a public way, but he definitely needs to know he's busted!
