I teach 5th grade and have implemented writer's workshop. One thing you can try with the little one's is to ask them what do they see, hear, smell, feel ,or taste? when describing something in their writing. You may want to put up a poster in your class with those reminders for them to see. It seems to be working well with my 5th grade kids...good luck!
