Maybe it depends on the teachers and how they use the program. Certainly, we need to teach transitions so the writing makes sense. Some kids never get past "first, next" and I agree those essays are brutal. By sixth grade
my proficient writers are learning to bury transitions to make the writing organized but less stilted.

I thought Step Up seemed like a great program younger writers. Two ladies taught the class I took. One was a first grade teacher and the other middle school. Both adapted the program to suit their needs.

My favorite part was that you don't throw out everything you already teach,

you simply incorporate the program into your current program. It transitions well with six traits.

Guess you need to just try it and see if it works for you. I tried 4 square last year and I hated it. I like six traits, but it was more of an ultimate goal than a writing program. Step up will help with the organizational piece.
