Are you only having four groups for the two classes? I have found that it is difficult to work with groups of more than 7-8. I think that the ideal size is 6 kids. I have been teaching with Guided Reading groups for the past 5 years and I love it. Are you using Guiding Readers and Writers by Fountes and Pinnell? It is a wonderful resource with a lot of great ideas.
P.S. I teach 5th grade.
