Yeh, there is not much you can do with a kid like that, his problems come from way back and you can't be expected to cure in forty minutes what his parents and real teachers deal with and put up with on a daily basis.
Remember, the most important thing is that the kids are safe, so if he removed himself from a potential altercation then that is good.
These real teachers don't expect you to be "super-sub" and work miracles. If you can just keep the plan moving along somewhat, no one gets hurt and a riot doesn't break out then that is just fine.
