I teach third, and I understand what you are saying about reading the directions, but these were not in depth directions here. We are talking it would say "Estimate by rounding" or "Use front end estimation." I know that these students can read and follow those directions...it would have been an inconvenience for everyone had I sat and actually read the directions, because some kids it would take 2 seconds to solve and others it would take 5 minutes to solve. We did however talk about each of the directions they would see. What is so frustrating about this is that this happens all the time, and I know these kids have the ability, they just rush through their work to get it done. I'm trying to show them the consequences of rushing.
