So far, I agree with the modeling of the story and using the 5 W's. Here's what I do:

I first model my own story. Then I give them a graphic organizer/web and have the use it to brainstorm. In the middle goes the topic
and they have to fill at least 5 bubbles. One for each W. They then take the information from their web and write their story. I also edit with them and then they will write their final draft. At the very least, they should have 7 sentences. One topic sentence, 5 W sentences and one conclusion.

Most of my students are also writing at least a page. That is the goal that I give

them. I started out letting them skip lines, now I prefer that they don't in their final copy.

Try this during the month of December. Tell them to write about what they do during their holiday, Christmas, Hannukah, etc...
