Maybe you could look for specific things you have taught recently in reading and writing...for example grade one paragraph for correct spelling of word wall words or words in general. Who are they writing the letter to? You? The author? Maybe that week you were working on setting and there were certain components you wanted students to pick up on that subject, they need to connect it to there writing.

I have my kids keep reader response logs(extended response on state test). they have to use key words from the prompt(5 points), use 3 specific examples from the text to answer the question (10 points), and connect it to their own experience (5 points).
