What has worked for me
By JulieP

Clip to ScrapBook
I have One child diagnosed and on meds, when mom can afford them. He was accustomed to blaming his behavior on not having his medicine. He had been able to get away with it in previous years. Not with me. I also have one
that is diagnosed but parents believe medicine is not the answer, and one that is Oppositionally Defiant. Woohoo! At least I haven't been assaulted yet this year.

Our district promotes Boys Town Skills. This has worked wonders with my students. While I do see a difference in my one when he is on the medication, he is much better now that we have begun working on social skills. The biggest

problem that I see with misbehavior is a huge lack of proper social skills. People have told these kids, no, that's not right, we don't act that way, and then left it up to the parents to teach them the right way to act. DUH!!! Where do you think the misbehavior comes from?
So I proactiviely teach the Boys Town Skills, and correctively teach them as needed.
I also allow my ADHD children the freedom to move when being distracted. My one now lets me know if he needs to move if he can't concentrate. I also allow him to take a short nap after lunch if he needs to. An ADHD child cannot handle a lack of sleep. They will be hyper even with medicine if they are trying to stay awake.
