well, I do not use the SRA reading program...I use Saxon Phonics...and as you might well guess it's a pure phonics program. I supplement it with Explode the Code and Beyond the code. My students don't get the idea that| they need to follow along while another person reads...they think they can just listen...I really work with them to follow along and to read with the other person - silently in their head- believe it or not many students have no clue how to do this...and they need to be taught. You even have to explain that this helps them to improve their own learning because they haven't figured that | | out on their own. I'm with you...when the child is in the beginning reading stage and is having difficulty sounding out the words, comprehension is often lost. One solution is to read the story as a group more than once. I have often read a story 3 days in a row and interestingly enough the kids don't seem to mind...go figure...
another solution...is there another special ed teacher in the building who might share her resources with you? or at least let you bounce ideas off of? I think you're going to have to work with what you have simply because your school is probably not going to give any money to a sub...but you might check and see if the classroom has a budget above and beyond the regular classroom budget - I know mine does...and then maybe you could get some materials you are more comfortable with. I don't know how much help that all was...but certainly post again if you have more questions
