Gift exchange
By Robin

Clip to ScrapBook
A person on this board had a great solution last year. I had run into what you were saying about people not honoring the price limits, disappointed kids etc. Someone suggested splitting the class into boys and girls. The
boys brought in a gift for each boy in the class (small "party favor" type treats or gifts limited to $3) and the girls did the same. I took all the gifts home and made boy bags and girl bags. The beauty of this is if someone chose not to participate (I didn't have that, but it could happen), there were so many neat items in the bags, that no one would notice. I also had anticipated needing
to add some gifts of my own to fill the bags, but I didn't need to.
I shared the idea with another third grade colleague, and it worked out very well for her also. I sent a letter home explaining it, and gave some examples of possible gifts that could be sent in. I also said in the letter that I realized this was a busy and often difficult financial time for many people, and their child would still get a bag if they chose not to participate. I'm going to do it again this year, too.
