I also teach Soc. Studies to another class - it's actually one of my best friend's class. She does a great job with the kids but doesn't follow through as much. The kids were very loud and just shouted out answers all of the time. I give each child one verbal warning a day then they turn a card. After just a few days it has improved so much. After no seeing them for awhile between units it goes back again but they learn quickly. With them, it was just knowing that it wasn't going to be empty threats. At first I'd have 6 or 8 turn at least one card a day. Now it's 2 or 3. I know that might not work with everyone, but for these kids they just needed to see the plan in action. Good luck!
