I'm in Canada too - southern Ontario. I notice you mentioned book markers. I've found a site (abc teach.com, I think) where you can print up bookmarks (seasonal or generic) that the kids can colour themselves, cut out and glue onto contruction paper or tag board to create their own book mark. This is a great activity for the kids who may finish their work early and an incentive for the others to finish up.
