It took a while
By Emma K

Clip to ScrapBook
I found my first few weeks a bit discouraging - I had one long and rather tough job right at the start and then things were a bit quiet and I was going all over the place - any school that called. Luck played a bit of a
part - a drama teacher was looking for someone to cover his classes and as I have secondary school drama as one of my teachables, he called me and we talked and I guess he liked what he heard because when an English teacher at that school went off on surgical leave a short time later, this drama teacher recommended me for that job. I've been a regular at that school ever since and love
it there. I work at about 3 high schools and 5 elementary schools that call me regularly but it took some time.

Have you considered visiting the schools and meeting with the secretary or principal and telling them you are new to subbing but would very much like to work at their school. Sometimes just the "package" - someone well-spoken, friendly and professional looking - will tip the scales in your favour, to say nothing of the fact that YOU took the initiative, on your own time, to stop in and introduce yourself. Make up some sub "business cards" (your name, sub request or phone number and the grades/subjects you teach) and ask if you can leave some for the teachers or pin one up in the staff room.

We are all "unknown faces" to most of the schools until we've been there and proven ourselves. Anything you can do to make yourself a "known face" will probably help you. And the more you work, the more work you will get (as you are finding now). Do let the teachers for whom you sub know that you would love to come back to their class again and leave your business card, with your name and phone #/sub # attached to your note at the end of the day so they can carry this with them. Some teachers will even call ahead to ask if you are available on a certain date before calling in their absence and requesting you specifically, and when that starts happening, it's really great.
