Newbie Advice By Waiting myself
|
|
Congratulations on your new position! I am waiting for a potential opening mid-year in a first grade myself (the teacher is having some health concerns). I have been subbing a lot in the school and the staff is very eager| to have me on their team. Anyway, back to your post. I may not be a teacher with my own classroom right now, but I have been working in many K-1 classrooms lately and think I can offer some advice. It is true that you will have your own procedures and routines and that it is VERY important that you practice, practice, practice right off the bat. Your students need to know the | | expectations (and consequences) right on the first day. There are ways to present rules and consequences in a positive light. Community building is also important. Maybe these kids already know each other, but you are new, so community building will give EVERYONE a chance for a fresh start. As far as transitions, there are a couple of different styles I have been witnessing (and practicing). A few signals I have used in different rooms for students to know it is time to change from one activity to another: * xylophone/chimes * music * clapping pattern * song You can pretty much pick anything you want, its the presentation, explaination, and practice that is important for any transition success. For attention getting I have used a chant (1,2,3 - Eyes on me) with great success. My students know that when I say this little rhyme, they are to stop what they are doing, turn their voices off, and look to me for instructions/directions. I hope this little bit helps. Good luck!
