You can be lenient in the beginning of the year, but by now these students should be able to follow simple directions. At this point if they are getting problems wrong due to the fact that they did not follow directions (which were explained) then it's marked wrong. I wouldn't even give a make-up test. Maybe I am being too tough, but they have to learn to follow the directions. If they keep getting unacceptable grades due to this problem, I am sure they will be more careful in the future.
