centers in 3rd By Susan

I had 8 gifted students (out of 23) out one full day a week, so I did my centers on that day. It was perfect for helping students with any concepts they were struggling with. I had simple centers like: 1. reading corner (either free reading, or I'd have several books related to something we were studying). 2. computers (Compass program or educational software) 3. stamps/pad - stamp out spelling words 4. flashcards - for multiplication 5. tutoring - where I was to go over anything they needed extra help with. 6. newspapers - specific skills (find/circle adverbs, summarize a story, etc...) | | We spent the whole day in the centers that day - about 25 min. to a center. They chose their own groups (3-4 to a group) and I set a timer so we'd all change at the same time. Seemed to work great! As far as our regular school day (other than the center day), I spent 2 weeks on science, then 2 weeks on social studies. That was easier than trying to cram them both into a school day. The schedule went like this: 7:40-8:10 - morning work (journals, handwriting, SSR) 8:10-8:55 - science or social studies 8:55 - snack 9:05 - bathroom break 9:10 - novel reading (ability grouped) 10:10 - math 11:00 - activity (music, PE, library) 11:40 - lunch 12:10 - recess 12:45 - reading/language arts 1:30 - bathroom break 2:15 - pack up/read aloud 2:30 - go home
