I agree with that statement. However, if my pay is to be tied to how well my students perform it is only fair that . . .

1. I am provided with adequate supplies (paper, pencils, books)
2. I can choose the reading and
math program I use or make decisions regarding how I use those programs.
3. I can permanantly remove violent, disruptive students from my classroom.
4. I can permanently remove the children of verbally abusive, disfuncitional parents from my classroom.
5. I am given the opportunity to teach without performing the duties of the custodian, social worker, parent, and therapist.
6.
Schwartzenger spends one month teaching in a real kindergarten class room, and then decides what should be considered "merit."

I think that our governor should realize that in some schools in our state simply "showing up" for work does show merit. I pay into our educational system every year. If it were not for me, my class would be writing with a stick in the mud. Some teachers in California work in very dangerous neighbors. Just by showing up for work they are endangering their lives.
