I'm in Colorado, and Harry Potter doesn't get any flak to speak of in the Denver area, but in Colorado Springs, look out! That is a very conservative Christian community, and when I lived there eight years ago (I was there| for 39 years) teachers were VERY leery of using that in their classrooms. I just got tenure, and I don't worry one little bit about what I use. If their parents might have a problem with a book, then they better get their tail in there and find out what the kids are reading for themselves, because I don't ask anyone's permission to read anything with my kids. I did once, in Denver, | | have a kid tell me that they weren't allowed to read Harry Potter. I just looked at her with amazement written all over my face and said, "Why?! Do your parents believe in magic?! There's no such thing as magic, you know. It's just a story." We weren't doing it for reading group, so it wasn't something I was asking her to read, but I thought that was pretty ridiculous.
