I did the same thing when I first got hired. There's nothing wrong with sounding anxious about a new job. At least it shows you care. I would just call and explain that you want to see what there is, and what you need to buy. Make sure you ask if they provide any office supplies or other items before you buy things you don't need to spend money on (I did that accidently). Then ask if it's okay to put things in your room as you buy them. They might be waxing the floors or doing other maintenance things, so make sure it's okay to be in there.
