System
By Jennifer in OK

Clip to ScrapBook
I had a similar situation this year. A student tested and fell below qualifying for LD, but wasn't low enough for MR. So this student was "in-between" and placed in nothing. What?! The school system I work in does not
have self-contained LD, only more severe learning disabilities are self-contained. It made me want to argue that maybe what we should do for those that fall in that 10 - 20 point gap should be in a self-contained situation. Then they are in a smaller group setting without being labeled special ed and they are also getting the more individualized help that we as a classroom teacher (and
how many kids?!) cannot always give. I had quite a group last year and couldn't do a whole lot of small group because of a few kids in my room that had little self-control. It is really frustrating that those kids that fall between the cracks don't get the helpt hey need and deserve! But who am I to talk. I am only a classroom teacher.
