lined handwriting paper
By nmrose

Clip to ScrapBook
I had a similar situation with my rascally fifth graders last year, only it was approximately a third of my class "micro-writing". I'd given ample warning at the beginning of the school year that, just like the post above,
if I can't read it I won't grade it. But too many were "experimenting" and my eyes are already too squinty and strained from trying to decipher - like raisins stuck on toothpicks! So I took action and announced we needed more handwriting practice on lined practice paper. Many howls of protest went up. "I can't erase on that stuff!" "I hate this kind of paper!" "I didn't know you make little
k's that way!..." Wah wah...*sigh...
My goodness how the handwriting improved once there were practice guidelines! We used the lined handwriting practice paper for spelling, language arts, and reading assignments involving rough drafts on reports. I even taped cursive handwriting tape to their desks. THAT was a novelty. But it made a difference. Every once in a while someone would try it again, and I'd pull out the tan-colored, lined, practice handwriting paper and we'd have another personal session of practice. I went to a teaching store and actually found lined handwriting practice paper for fifth grade! Oh joy! Someone read my mind...
