some ideas...

This is a great board!

~I would talk to the ESL specialist for advice on how to welcome ESL students into my classroom. You may want to plan a unit about where your students come from (include all students, not only ESL
students). This could be a great at-home project. Maybe the kids could ask their parents where their ancestors are from. They could also talk about family traditions. Maybe they could create a poster (or something visual) to share with the class as a presentation. That way everyone is involved, feels special, and it would probably make it more comfortable for the ESL students to share.

~I would definitely try and find out how THEY teach reading. You want your responses to correlate with how they believe reading should be taught. Do they use the basals? Do they teach using guided reading with balanced literacy or 4blocks? You might be able to find some information on their district's website. Is there anyone you can contact via e-mail or telephone to explain how they teach reading?

Good luck!
