money system By Pat

I asked the same question when I was moving, "what about discipline? What about the money system?" You will be amazed by how well the fifth graders behave. Other teachers told me this and I was still nervous. I remember| the first day and the first time I said, "O.K., everyone, it's time to begin." They all quieted down and looked at me expectantly. I really don't think you will need it. I do a "fishing for good deeds" every week. I keep a fish bowl at the front of my room and the kids can enter eachother for good deeds. I draw two names a week and they can either get two pieces of candy or pick | | a "mystery bag" which has a small toy or a pencil inside. I also do points for spelling and have a spelling auction twice a year. They can lose points for bad behavior, but I have only done that a few times. Usually, I just talk to them about their behavior and that seems to be enough. I don't know, it is just so much easier at this age. I have a friend who does the money thing and I think she spends way too much time to get the same level of effectiveness I get. Pat
