I teach fifth grade, and I'll take this time to give you some information about my grading.

1. I don't weigh grades. Everything is worth the same. I feel that it's not fair to weigh grades because some students don't do
well on tests and if I weighed tests more than homework, it's not really fair to those that really do know the material, just don't do take tests well.

2. I use a total points system. I add up the points possible and use that as my denominator. Then I had up the points earned and use that as my numerator. I find the percentage by dividing the two. That's the percentage. I prefer this

more because missing 2 on a pop quiz or something is pretty good, but if it were out of 5, that would be a 60% which could bring down the average. With the total points, the student would only lose 2 points.

3. Late work is a 0, but it still needs to be turned in before the student can take the test.

4. It's get hard at times to correct papers. Sometimes I just give completion points for assignments. When I give completion points, I allow the student to correct their own. Other times when I don't give completion points, I may let them correct their work; however, I don't have them trade. They correct their own. I feel that their grade is their business, not another student, so I don't have students correct each other's papers. Yes, by allowing students to correct their own, cheating may take place. I usually pick 2-4 questions to look at. If any of those are wrong and marked right, I check the whole thing. They also lose double the points. For example, if the assignment was worth 10 points and had a score of 8/10, they really get a 4/10 if they cheated. I don't give a 0 because sometimes it's an honest mistake, but there's no way to really prove if they cheated. If it happens habitually, though, that's when I get parents and/or the principal involved.

Hope this helps!
