Just a fad...

I don't know where you teach, but I would doubt that this is anything more than just a fad. Kids at this age like to experiment. (I remember in second grade spelling my name a different way every day on my paper!) So I wouldn't get too concerned about the "gang" aspect of it unless you think that's a viable possibility in your community. Then it might be worth checking into.A lot of time this type of thing goes away on it's own. I usually joke with the kids, "Write so my middle-aged eyes can see it!" If you can't tease them out of it, consequences such as having to redo the assignment generally work.
