I couldn't agree more with you Lori. AR is just a tool to get kids reading more. It has worked very well for me. I only used it as a very small part of their grade (2 classwork assignments from our rubric grade each quarter).
You are exactly right when you said that reading more is what improved their scores, not AR. However, sometimes the older kids won't do it if they know it is not going to be part of their grade. They won't care about their log and won't take any quizzes. This is not true for many of my students, but you always have a handful of those students who don't care about any assignment unless
it is for a grade. I always tell my kids when they ask me "is this for a grade?" Everything you do is part of your grade! Which is true in a sense because everything I assign will help them improve their grade in some way.
