That indeed tells me a lot. I guess that there are so many programs out there because most teachers really don't know how to teach reading (and a 4-5 hour course in an ed. program doesn't teach much). Having minored in
Reading, I know that what you say is true--kids get better at reading BY READING! Reader's workshop is easy to facilitate--how sad that schools and districts spend so much money on programs, when all they really need are teachers who give lots of time for independent reading AT THE CORRECT LEVEL, daily read-alouds, time to share......AAAAGGHHH!! We really could throw all these programs
in the trash. My school makes low readers do SRA--now there's a real joke (only no one is laughing).
