I teach third grade and have done so for about 4 years now. I like the previous poster's ideas on assigning things points. Mostly, I pick an assignment each week from each subject area to grade. I try to give a weekly geography quiz, spelling test, and vocab. test as well. With homework, I usually give a check, check plus, or check minus and consider it practice. Once in awhile, (especially if I am missing a grade in an area) I will pick a piece of homework to grade. I think this keeps most of the kids on their toes then when they do their homework. I have also given homework back to the class to redo and turn in again.
