Writing Scores

We have the Tx TAKS test and Writing was our school's best score. We have a new teacher team of 3 and started with the heaviest focus on writing this past year. Next week we are meeting to put together specific plans from
what went well and what didn't. Several 4th grade teachers are coming from the other campus to join us. Next year we focus on math and reading!
First we started with writing for fluency. Everyday writing time with all kinds of prewriting. Then introduced conferencing with peers and later, the teacher. All writing is contained in a spiral. We prefaced writing time often with

minilessons based on reading-writing connections. We discovered an editing series from Carson-Dellosa (sp)that was a great help as well. We worked intensely with that for 3 months preceeding the test. We also had a spelling tutoring group twice a week for 20 min. that worked with Hooked on Phonics. This really helped our ESL kiddos. Our pop is 50-50 hispanic/anglo.
