Anxiety is not something that you can wish away by thinking good thoughts. If you have ever been caught in the downward spiral of a panic attack, you would know that anxiety can take on a life of its own and, if the cycle| is not broken, it can lead to full-blown clinical depression. Job-related stresses are only part of the problem. As a number of other posters have said, there often is a chemical imbalance that is exacerbated by day-to-day stresses. Without medication to regulate the problem, the situation will not improve but, rather, will become debilitating. I have experienced this personally and | | my husband and several friends have, as well. Believe me, it is not a pretty picture.I have needed to take anxiety meds several times over the years for periods ranging from a few months to a year or more. That, combined with counseling, has allowed me to get back on track. My husband has had a history of anxiety and depression, sometimes severe, which requires maintenance medication for the rest of his life. The process of finding just the right combinaton of dosing has been challenging at times, but necessary to his well-being. He is not a teacher, by the way. While your post may not have been intended to be judgemental, it is a little bit insensitive. Few people take anxiety meds just for the sake of taking them.
